We recently finished another bespoke beauty: The Dormy House has launched on Advanced Shopify.

The Dormy House: about the brand.

Founded in 1981, The Dormy House is a family-owned business that has mastered the art of home with its bespoke, high-quality furniture, storage, and soft furnishings. The brand’s raison d'être is perfecting the balance of beauty and utility in all its products. The Dormy House achieves this by inviting customers to ‘become the designer’ with its popular modular range and collection of fully customisable pieces, which allow customers to choose the product configuration, paints, fabrics, and handles.

Take a seat: the brand has a gorgeous selection!

Flexibility & customisation on Shopify Advanced.

“The Dormy House team wanted an elegant, high-performing Advanced Shopify site with a new modular furniture builder that worked flawlessly on both desktop and mobile,” says Scott MacDonald, Client Services Director at blubolt. “Another objective was to have flexibility over content sections to allow for easier customisation of the site.” From here, the blubolt team delivered a migration from Prestashop to Advanced Shopify. As a result, the brand has all the functionality and in-house control with Shopify’s Online Store 2.0 and a highly scalable foundation for growth.

An elegant bespoke design to reflect their custom products.

“The old site had been created before The Dormy House had established its current brand design,” says Matt Richards, Head of Design at blubolt. “As such, we created an elegant, streamlined, and user-friendly Advanced Shopify theme design to reflect the brand now - a purveyor of sophisticated, high-quality, and enduring products. Another key project requirement was redesigning the custom furniture builder so it worked seamlessly on mobile. Done!”

Flexible features & functionality.

Building with Shopify’s Online Store 2.0, the blubolt team set about fulfilling The Dormy House’s brief to give them greater in-house flexibility and creative control. “Using Shopify’s ‘sections everywhere’, the brand can now easily tailor pages and highlight aspects of the business in-house in response to changing seasons and offers,” says Richard Ayles, Head of Development at blubolt. “For example, the homepage features a ‘Made for you - become the designer’ section to promote The Dormy House’s easy-to-use bespoke furniture builder (more details below).” In addition, the page showcases brand favourites, customer quotes to build trust, and the Instagram feed to hear the latest news.

The team also utilised Online Store 2.0s metafield configuration on the product detail pages. As a result, The Dormy House team can customise the range of products with a vast array of options specific to each unit with neat features to automatically match the options to the photo on display.

Tech partners for the project include Boost Commerce for collections and search, Klaviyo for email marketing, and Tidio for live chat.

Mastering the art of home: the new website

The magic of modular: The Dormy House custom furniture builder.

The star of The Dormy House’s new Advanced Shopify site is the sleek, easy-to-use, and mobile-friendly modular furniture builder. Designed and built with React, the builder enables customers to create storage furniture that’s personalised to them without the usual high price tag of bespoke furniture. With fifteen furniture options - everything from desks, drawers and cabinets to bookcases, wardrobes and kitchen larders - customers can simply measure their own space and select base and top units using the modular grid function. From there, using the intuitive drag and drop functionality, customers can use the grid to create their ideal configuration before choosing paint colours and handles.

Behind the scenes, this modular builder delivers on a number of complex requirements, namely:

  • Dimensions. It has the ability to show accurate dimensions to the end-user.

  • Store product layout. It can store the layout of the individual items selected to form the overall design as an image. This image then shows the Dormy House team how to build the customer’s custom design correctly.

  • Logic. It has the logic to ensure the correct amount of colours and handles were added to each unique "custom" build.

The Dormy House: at home on Advanced Shopify.

To conclude, we asked Anna Trinder, Owner of The Dormy House, what she thought of the new website. “It’s fantastic to have a flexible, user-friendly site – for both us and our customers - that works seamlessly across all devices while showcasing our wonderful products. We’re most excited about the modular furniture builder that enables our customers to design the perfect piece from the very comfort of their  home.”
